Like I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve recently started using a technique in our office called MSK ultrasound. This technique allows us to directly image muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint spaces, etc. to better assist our patients in deciding a course of action to recover, train and prevent future injuries.
The image above is from a video I took this week of an endurance runner with a sore Achilles tendon. Notice how the top part of the tendon (where arrow points) appears “dark and shadowy”? This is consistent with the findings of Achilles tendinopathy and is very treatable, oftentimes while continuing to train (one of our primary goals!).
As you can imagine, this is extremely valuable information in answering the ever-important “Can I run through this?” question that we get so frequently.
